Dear Families,
In just a few days we will be in the month of October! School days are now routine for our young learners and they are already showing so much growth and progress academically and socially. Starting this Monday, students are allowed to ride home on a different bus with a friend. Please use this dismissal option cautiously and take into consideration the maturity and independence of your child. As always, please ensure that your dismissal plans are updated daily prior to the 1:00 p.m. cutoff time.
Recess and Physical Education
Our students have recess daily in their schedule as well as physical education twice a week. In addition, classes often take breaks outside for additional movement breaks. For this reason, we strongly recommend that your child wear sneakers to school everyday. Our students are very active during the school day and sneakers are the best option for safe play.
North House Playground Project
Through the generous support of our PTO, our North House upgrade project is underway. We anticipate the renovation to continue through the second week of October. Please avoid this area when you are on campus and do not use the North House playground area to walk between buildings before or after school. It is my recommendation that for the next two weeks car riders are picked up from Hurlbutt and WIS rather than having WIS students walk to Hurlbutt after school to meet their siblings.
School Lunch
Starting this Tuesday, October 1, our students will have additional items for purchase in the cafeteria. In advance of those choices, please review those options with your child. This link: Lunch Menus will take you to the culinary services section of the website and the school lunch menus. Please note there is a lunch menu and a separate a la carte, beverage and snack menu so be sure to check out both. It is our recommendation that you review these items with your child and set some clear expectations about what you want them to purchase. If you are interested in placing any restrictions on your child’s account, please email foodservices@westonps.org.
Climate Survey
The district wide family climate survey remains open until October 11. We encourage you to participate as this gives us valuable information. For your convenience, here is the link again. Family Survey Link: Family Survey
Hispanic Heritage Month
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month beginning on September 15 through October 15, the office of Congressman Jim Himes is holding an essay contest to honor Hispanic/Latinx icons and their legacy. The attached letter has information for any student interested in participating. Please contact Congressman Himes' office directly should you have any questions. Submissions must be received in their office by Friday, October 4th.
Math and Reading Curriculum Information
If you missed our curriculum information letters in the previous weekly updates, they are included here again for your convenience. Our second graders are using a new core curriculum resource, Illustrative Math which the teachers shared at Back to School Night. This resource will help us continue to support our goal of ensuring all students demonstrate growth in their conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts, become deeper mathematical thinkers and more confident problem solvers. In all grades, students are engaged in hands-on experiences that take them through a concrete-pictorial-abstract mathematical process to help them develop as mathematicians. We will also be hosting a workshop for parents to provide a hands-on look at our program. More information will be sent out soon.

The Hurlbutt curriculum instructional leaders are Kelly DelVecchio for math/science and Andrea Noble for language arts/social studies. They support all of our teachers and are a valuable resource for families.
