CAMPUS

Week of October 13

Posted Date: 10/18/2024

Dear Families,

October is a very busy month!  We have many activities and events planned for this coming week and the rest of October.  School is closed this Monday for Columbus Day/Indigenous People Day.  Listed below are highlights for the next week and beyond.

Safety Information

The safety of our students and staff is paramount and we want to clarify an important detail about our locked doors. While doors are kept locked to ensure that unauthorized individuals cannot enter, students and staff are never “locked in.”  Students and staff can always exit the room without having to unlock the door. The locking mechanism only restricts entry from the outside, ensuring safety, while still allowing free and easy exit in case of emergencies.  Please rest assured that safety protocols are in place to protect everyone while ensuring easy access to exit when needed. Our goal is to create a safe yet comfortable learning space where students can focus on their growth and education without worry.

Book Fair

The book fair is open on Tuesday!  Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become Bolder, Prouder, and Stronger Readers. AND—as always—every book they buy earns rewards for our school.  This year all proceeds from the Hurlbutt Scholastic Book Fair will go toward the One School One Book program and author visits.  We hope you will join us for our family shopping day as well on October 17.  Follow this link for more information about the book fair and our wonderful PTO who sponsors and runs this event for us. HES BOOK FAIR 2024_All School Email

School Picture Day!

Coffee Pond will be coming to Hurlbutt this Friday, October 18!  Retakes will be December 6th.  Coffee Pond has made it easy for you to place your portrait order online. Just follow these simple steps:  Go to www.coffeepond.com and click on the big red button that says “Order School Portraits and shop our exclusive products”.

Road paving on Route 57

We received notice from the Selectmen's Office that next week, Tuesday, October 15-16, the Town will be milling and resurfacing a portion of Route 57 from Trails End Road to Christopher Hill Road.  The work is scheduled to take place from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday to Wednesday.  The road will still be open, but anyone traveling in that direction should expect delays.  Also, please be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. If you are driving to campus during that time, please plan for extra time.

Halloween

Our students are already talking about Halloween.  They are excited about their costumes and the events of the holiday.  The Hurlbutt community will be holding our annual Halloween parade and classroom celebrations on October 31.   It is tradition at Hurlbutt for our ELC and kindergarten parents/guardians to be invited to our parade.  Detailed information about the parade procedures will be sent to ELC and kindergarten families the week of October 20.

  • When planning costumes, please be mindful that students are parading and they need costumes in which they can easily move around the building.

  • Weapons (toy guns, knives, etc) are not permitted. Students should come to school dressed in their costume ensuring that these outfits allow for full participation in school activities including recess and physical education.

  • Masks and headwear should not obstruct vision. These items can make it difficult for students to see and maneuver the curbs and steps.  Many students choose to wear their masks on their heads, which is a great solution.

  • Halloween is one of our four classroom parties that includes food.  Room parents will be coordinating snacks with our classroom teachers.  We are an allergy alert school and food allergies will be considered when planning food in the classroom. Our district wellness guidelines ensure healthy snack choices during these events. Each class will have a limited number of volunteers to support classroom crafts and activities during their classroom celebrations.  These volunteers will be coordinated between the classroom teacher and room parents.

  • For health and safety reasons, please do not send candy to school following Halloween.  These treats are more appropriate to be enjoyed at home under your guidance. Students are not permitted to share food in school.

Halloween Haunt Concert:

The Weston High School Music department will present a “Halloween Haunt Concert” on Tuesday evening, October 29 from 7:00-7:45 p.m in the high school gymnasium. All proceeds will benefit the high school music department - $10 for the whole family or $5 per person. Fun activities will include a Halloween costume parade, temporary tattoos, and candy trick-or-treat.

Math Workshop for Parents/Guardians

Our  annual parent & guardian math workshops are filling up fast. We have added a second session to accommodate our families.  Our goal is to help you understand the math your child is learning and allow you to better support their learning at home. This session will be interactive and hands-on, so come excited to learn some new ways to think about mathematics!  If you have any questions please reach out to our Curriculum Instructional Leader, Kelly DelVecchio at  kellydelvecchio@westonps.org.

Billboard Contest and Recycling:

Our students have been learning about recycling and participated in an assembly called Trash Talks presented by the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority (HRRA), a regional, governmental, waste management and recycling authority serving fourteen municipalities in western Connecticut. Students are invited to participate in the HRRA annual recycling billboard contest.  This contest encourages participants to design billboards that promote recycling and sustainability, raising awareness in our communities about the importance of environmental responsibility.

  • Artwork must be submitted on the provided template and created in landscape orientation 10” x 4”. Artwork must be in color, in any medium of the student’s choosing. The ORIGINAL ARTWORK MUST BE submitted and completed by the student. One student per entry and only one entry per student allowed.

  • Student’s name, address, school and grade must be printed on space provided.

  • The 2025 Billboard theme is: “Batteries Can Cause Fires” Student’s artwork should teach residents that batteries don’t belong in the trash or household recycling.  Artwork should promote how to properly dispose of batteries.  HERE are some examples of previous years.

  • Cash prizes are awarded to regional winners.

  • HERE is the official website with educational videos and more resources for this year’s contest and theme
