Dear Families, As we begin the month of March we are looking forward to warmer days and signs of spring around campus. Temperatures will continue to fluctuate so layers are still the best way to dress for comfort both indoors and outdoors. Please note that next week is our family conference week which brings changes to our school schedule. We strive for 100% of our families to participate in our family-teacher conferences. Classroom teachers have emailed sign up information so please check your email for those directions. Conferences are valuable opportunities for teachers and families to discuss student progress as well as learning goals for the remainder of the year. New Director of Security Families will have the opportunity to meet the new Director of Safety and Security, Mr. James Wiltsie, in March. There will be two Meet the Director programs. The first will be Thursday, March 13 from 7 to 8:30 PM at Weston Middle School. The second will be at the HES/WIS PTO meeting on Wednesday, March 26 from 9:30 to 11:00 AM in the WIS cafeteria. You do not have to be in the HES/WIS PTO to join this meeting. We encourage you to attend one of these meetings. Celebrating Reading This week we celebrate the joy of reading as a school community by joining the Read Across America nationwide event. The National Education Association launched Read Across America in 1998 as a year-round program to celebrate reading across the country with a special focus on the month of March. We will track our minutes of reading in school which will be represented in miles we track across our map. We hope our families will join us in finding dedicated time as a family to read together. We invite our students to show their school spirit and love of reading by participating in our spirit days. These days are theme based and are designed as simple ways to join the fun without needing to buy anything new. Music in our Schools Month For 40 years, March has been designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) as Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®). The positive impact of music education in the lives of students lasts a lifetime. Therefore, ensuring equitable access to music education for the youngest members of our society—students—is paramount. Every day, in classrooms and rehearsal rooms across our school district, music educators dedicate themselves to reaching all students with life-changing musical experiences. Parents, administrators, and the wider community often only see the wonderful results of music performances; however, we miss the months of practice and rehearsals and more importantly the learning process that takes place to make it all happen. Throughout the month of March, our schools will celebrate our exceptional music program with building-wide activities and in-school performances featuring student musicians. We encourage members of our community to acknowledge and celebrate music education as an essential part of every student’s educational journey! At Hurlbutt Elementary School, we will feature “Musical Moments” on our morning announcements each week. School-wide Musical Moments will include Mystery Moments, Movement Moments, and Meditative Moments. Communication Protocol Please remember we have a HES Communication Protocol 2024-2025.pdf to help you navigate the common occurrences in the daily lives of students, families, and staff. For many of your concerns, this protocol will let you know how to proceed.
