Week of May 18

Posted Date: 05/19/2025

Dear Families,

Our students continue to learn and grow each day at Hurlbutt.  During the last week of school each class will have a celebration of learning.  Please be on the lookout for an email from your child’s classroom teacher with date and time information.

As we rapidly approach the final month of school we are updating all of our progress monitoring to confirm end of year benchmark levels for students.  Students in grades K,1 and 2 are taking the NWEA spring math assessment.  Second graders are taking the spring NWEA reading assessment for the first time and all grades are completing their spring Dibels foundational skills assessment for reading.  These assessments give us valuable information for planning for next year.  We also recognize that student performance on a single assessment represents a moment in time. We take all the information we have about our students into consideration when analyzing those results.

This week we welcome a group of Weston High School seniors for their spring internship experience. We are proud to be a part of this opportunity for WHS seniors to gain experiences outside of the classroom in a workplace setting. This experience exposes them to possible career paths and interests.

Planning for Next Year

If for any reason, your student is not returning to Hurlbutt or not transitioning to WIS next year, please reach out to our registrar, Nicole DiPierro at nicoledipierro@westonps.org.  This will give us time to prepare withdrawal paperwork before the summer.  We know when families are moving, the receiving districts may need transcripts or information prior to the end of the current school year.

Kindergarten Paper Bag Challenge

Thank you for all your support of our kindergarten students during their first community service project.  Our kindergarten students led our school in collecting much needed items for the Weston Food Pantry.  Each kindergarten class visited other classrooms to inspire our students and staff to support this worthy cause through posters and speeches. We were overwhelmed with the school community response and the Weston Pantry is now well stocked with supplies.

One School One Book

We hope you were able to join us in reading our One School One Book selection this year,  A True Home.  It was a treat for us to have a virtual author visit with Kallie George on May 14.  Our One School One Book website is still active.  Here is the link if you want to check it out.  OSOB website

The Used Book Sale at the One School, One Book Family Fun event in June is back! We invite you to send your child in with UP TO FIVE (no more) gently used books for donation to the sale. Books will be accepted between May12th-May21st. Collection boxes will be in the classroom and please only send books appropriate for grades K-2. Please note we will not accept any books with rips, spills or missing flaps. Most books will be $1 (some hardcovers will be $5). Cash and venmo will be accepted. This is a great opportunity to recycle wonderful books within our community, especially before summer! Any questions? Please contact Whitney Levin at Whitneyshaylevin@gmail.com

Spring Climate Surveys

We encourage your participation and feedback as we begin to plan for the next school year. The survey window for all surveys is from May 4th to May 31st. For your convenience, here is the link to the district surveys.  Family Survey  The climate surveys provide an opportunity to gather comprehensive data on the experiences and perceptions of students, staff, and the broader community. Your feedback is important to us. If you have more than one child in the Weston Public Schools, please complete one survey for each child. The survey is anonymous. Students (grades 3 and up) and staff in each of our buildings will complete Panorama Education student and staff climate surveys during the month of May. Our students in grades 1 and 2 will continue to take the survey used in previous years. We hope you feel comfortable answering the questions honestly to help us review our programs and ensure our students feel physically, socially, and emotionally safe in our schools.

Kindergarten Registration

If you have an incoming kindergarten student for the 25-26 school year, please begin the registration process.  Follow this link to our district website to register. Registration

If you have a student in the ELC program who is age eligible for kindergarten, you will need to register using the link above. Children are eligible for kindergarten if they are 5 on or before September 1, 2025. Planning for our classes is in process and having accurate registration information will help us design the best experience for our students.

Communication protocol link to website

Please remember we have a HES Communication Protocol 2024-2025.pdf to help you navigate the common occurrences in the daily lives of students, families, and staff. For many of your concerns, this protocol will let you know how to proceed.

Sincerely,

Laura Kaddis

Principal
