Dear Families,
We had a great first week of school. Our students have earned so many honeycombs and we are well on our way to filling the honeyhive for the first time this year. Our motto at Hurlbutt is Be Safe, Kind and Responsible. Our teachers and staff have been teaching all of our students what it looks like and sounds like to live this motto everyday at Hurlbutt. Please take a few minutes to review the updates and information below. Each week I will be sending out a weekly update to families to highlight important dates and other information from school.
School Day
We had a very smooth first week of school. Thank you for your help making sure your students are on the bus or at our car drop area ready to start the day which begins at 8:30 a.m. Our teachers start the day with a class morning meeting. When all of our students arrive on time, the entire class can start the day greeting each other, reviewing the schedule for the day and creating a sense of belonging for the entire group. Last year we had over 2,000 tardies logged for our school. Our goal this year is to reduce the number of students arriving late. We appreciate your assistance in helping us start the day with all of our students in class when the day begins. If there is anything we can do to support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
PBIS
Throughout the year you will hear our students use the term, PBIS. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. This is our schoolwide approach and philosophy to creating and supporting a positive school climate. Through our school motto, we create and support a safe and welcoming school climate. Each month we will have school wide assemblies where we celebrate our students and their efforts in this area. You will be informed of those dates and we will invite our students to wear school spirit wear or our school colors which are yellow, black and white.
Back to School Night
In September we host Back to School Night for each grade level. Please make a note of the following dates. These evenings are for adults only. These nights are valuable opportunities for you to learn about your child’s classroom and their teacher. Our special area teachers will be available prior to the ELC/Kindergarten evening in the library from 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. We invite all families, including first and second grade families to stop in and meet them during this time. Teachers at this event include our reading interventionists, math interventionists, mental health team and special education service providers.
Special Area Teachers Open House: Thursday, September 4. 5:45-6:30 p.m. in our library
ELC/Kindergarten: Thursday, September 4. 6:30 p.m.
First Grade: Wednesday, September 10. 6:30 p.m.
Second Grade: Thursday September 11. 6:30 p.m.
Transportation
Our car line area and bus procedures are off to a great start. A few reminders for the car line. Please have your child enter and exit the car on the sidewalk side of the car only. This is much safer than passing between cars. If you are bringing a preschool child by car, please enter the main parking lot and follow the direction of our staff who will help you find a spot. At the end of the day, all cars should be entering and exiting through the main entrance traffic circle. Please do not park in the parking lot and pick up your child as a walker. This confuses our pick up procedures and causes unnecessary delays and traffic in the parking lot. The walker option in Dismissal Manager is intended for families who live within walking distance of the school. We appreciate your cooperation as we strive to keep these busy traffic times safe and efficient.
Communication protocol
Each school has a communication protocol to assist you in identifying who to contact if you have a question. The classroom teachers are your first point of contact for classroom related questions. Please refer to the communication protocol if you are not sure who to contact for other questions. This document is also available on our school website. Hurlbutt Communication Protocol
Summer Learning
We will have our first all school assembly the week of September 8 to celebrate all of our summer learning. If your child completed a summer reading log or summer math log, please send those back to school with your child by Friday. September 5. Here is the link to our summer learning page for your convenience. Summer Learning
I wish everyone a wonderful holiday weekend. We look forward to welcoming our students back on Tuesday.
Sincerely,
Laura Kaddis
Principal
